Theresa May. At last a Tory I can vote for ??

Post by mistermack » Thu Nov 15, 2012 8:06 pm

I last voted Tory for Margaret Thatcher. To keep Neil Kinnock out, and stomp on unions.
But what's happening now?

Amazing. A home secretary is now saying what I've been saying for years.
That immigration DOESN'T make us better off. That it drives up house prices.
And that the growth that it causes is FALSE growth. Because it has to support more people.

Theresa May is now making ALL the right noises about immigration.
How unskilled immigration is a liability, not a benefit to the country.
How there should be strict limits on Student visas, to eliminate the fiddled immigration.

And tougher controls on spouses etc. etc.

So great, someone is finally saying what I've said for years.
BUT, what's ACTUALLY happening? The net immigration is still about 250,000 py,
and it's fallen by a paltry 3,000 ish. And that's when the economy is on it's back.

So, she's making all the right noises, saying all the right things.
But doing fuck-all.

But she will probably get votes out of it. People are such mugs.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Good old Tess :

May: Immigration is driving demand for homes

Theresa May slams City critics

And here she is bigging it up like she's actually done something

If it wasn't such a pack of lies, I'd probably vote for her.
There is a carefully packaged message going out here, that the Tories are hard on immigration.
They are hoping to get that message across, with hardly any change in the figures at all.
Slick salesmanship, if they can pull it off.

They have to say these things, otherwise they will lose votes ... actually, more votes ... to UKIP.

Off topic ... but how would you feel about a world government deciding on immigration levels for UK? Just occurred to me.

They will also have to make it look as is if they're doing something as the next general election looms in a few years. Otherwise, they really will lose votes to UKIP when it really counts. Perhaps enough to scupper an overall majority*.

*Actually, I don't think the Tories will be anywhere near that in 2016, regardless of what Scotland votes to do in 2014.

It seems to me one can take a practical and pragmatic position about immigration without also in reality (or perception) taking on the whole right wing agenda. Even Labour are saying they want to 'listen' to the concerns of the public over the issue. May and the Tories aren't being remotely objective or impartial on the issue however. The Little Englanders so beloved of RC are still a significant force within Toryland and May I fancy is one of them.

I think it was Labour's Harriet Harman on Question Time on BBC this week who joked that "the Tories had split the UKIP vote" in this weeks by-election, ha.

I'm not a fan of either Miliband or this right of centre incarnation of Labour generally, but if David Miliband were their leader I imagine they would be absolute certainties to win the next GE. But with Ed Miliband? Not sure. I suspect it will be another hung parliament at westminister.

Suck it up, champ. If both sides of politics support immigration in practice, then you are in a small minority.

That's pretty poor logic. It's a strange definition of minority when you don't count the public.

Got credible stats for that?
