Paul Johnson wrote Mr Moto for the Belairs (band with no bass player) when he was a teen: I saw him just like that (balding) playing a gig at a chemistry conference evening event.

reverb (echo) was the first thing labeled as surf. The Ventures were "bricklayers" from Tacoma, not surfers. Selling tens of millions of records...in Japan
