I think this guy is probably a bonafide genius - and I don't use the term lightly. He deserves a thread of his own. Lots out there on Youtube. He does it all incidentally - plays, records and everything.

I know I'm getting soft in my old age but I usually end up with tears rolling down my face listening to his breathtaking stuff.

Check out the accordion player. Seriously, staggeringly good. The drummer's up for it too.

Yeah. Sure. Whatever etc.

I don’t know if you know anything about music theory, but amongst other things this lad is inventing new chords. Watch this space.

He'd be better if he did his own stuff. Will be interesting to see if he can sustain a career doing covers. At the moment he just comes across like fancy cabaret to me.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Can you give an example of a new chord?

Jacob Collier is obviously very skilled at what he does, but going by the two clips offered in the opening post the result of his efforts is a kitschy melange of pop going nowhere. Just my opinion, of course. I listened to the first track twice and the second one one and a half times. No spark. I suspect that if I gave them a third chance, Collier's musical offerings would begin to irritate me.

Are you suggesting that I'm not enamoured by Jacob Collier's output because I am a grumpy old fart?.

It's not that I don't find him impressive, I do, he's just not really my cup of tea. When it comes to self-published and produced, multi-instrumentalists I'm more into Gautier Serre right now. Though you're far less likely to hear him on the radio as he doesn't tick the pop boxes.
