How many bands have you seen?

Post by Tero » Mon Oct 15, 2018 3:17 am

Bands with recordings, not bar bands.

Name one of the first 5 we would know.

In ’71 I saw Family and Argent at the same festival.

Not all that many, but the first two I saw were real classics. Manfred Mann and the Kinks did a world tour around 1965 and came to Hong Kong. I was 15 at the time and thought I was in heaven when I saw them.

A little later the Beatles came to HK. My dad was police officer in charge of the area where the theatre they were appearing at was located at the time and he was convinced there was going to be a serious riot and he refused to let me see them! Took me a long time to forgive him!

I count myself very lucky, a few years later in the UK to have seen Hendrix live in Bristol (everything he was cracked up to be), the Who in Leicester (where there was a riot as a bunch of bikers invaded the concert!), A long gap after that and only perhaps eight or ten concert visits in all the years since. They include Ray Davies (of the Kinks), Pat Metheney, Alison Moyet (cos Mrs Rum is a fan) and Dweezil Zappa (cos his dad was dead!).

I just remembered that I saw Jon Mayall blues breakers in the mid 60s just before both Eric Clapton and Peter Green left. I've been lucky!

Trying to get some kind of real estimate. At least 30 Finnish bands. For US I have to look at CD collection.

Never seen Clapton, but the blues era brought Mayall here, so saw him about 1976.

Went over this walll of 500+ CDs by 100-150 artists. I’ve seen 35 of them.

I used to go to a club in Wisconsin in an old funeral home building that had blues most weekend. Got to see Mose Allison and John Lee Jokker and Hound Dog Taylor. Not entirely sure if I saw Johnny Winter.

If I had to name the bands seen in US, I can list some 80. In Finland some 30. So we are over 100. Possibly I've sen 150 that made recordings, some were just things I got dragged along to in Berkeley when my friend Chris won tickets on the radio. So some bands I was not a fan of and still enjoyed the concert of. Some are memorable concerts, like Taj Mahal, and I had trouble finding even one CD.

Not that many, or quite a few unknown bands in festivals.... still, I've seen Alan Stivell nearly a half dozen times, and the Chieftains once, Van Morrison once too... I regret being too young to have been at Woodstock or ever seeing Janis Joplin in Person.

I would have been at that Stivell concert! In a similar manner have seen Leo Kottke some dozen times. That probably is the winner of most times. Some others 2-3 times.
Rum, I too have seen Pat Metheney. The whole jazz CD thing is hidden in a shoe box. I saw either Return To Forever or Weather Report, whichever Stanley Clarke was in. It gave me a headache. I left after one set!

That's quite a collection of CDs Tero! I had a large collection of vinyl in the day and then CDs too, but as I have gotten older I have become a lot more fussy about what I listen to. The 'vibe'', style and subculture around a band have become far less important and the quality of the musicianship has gained prominence in terms of taste. One reason why I love Zappa so much - he was ultimately a musician - a brilliant one too - and not a rock star.

I have recently discovered, at my advanced age - hip-hop. I'm choosy about it though I must say and I go for the less aggressive and jazzier stuff. Can't imagine going to see hip-hop live though!

Mrs Rum, incidentally is going to see Culture Club (or maybe it is Boy Geroge solo) in November with a friend of hers. Not my thing at all!

Yeah I can’t do rap or hip hop. I’m too concentrated on the music. The lyrics have to be OK but nothing special. I do have some artists where I concentrate on lyrics only, a sort of theatrical angle to performing. Zappa has an impressive voice, and you rarely miss the lyrics if he sings them himself.
I made a great effort/struggle to get Gabriel era Genesis lyrics.

If I ever got involved making music in any serious way, it probably would have been totally weird music. I have a vague understanding of chords and harmony, yet I can detect pitch very well, so it bothers me when instruments play out of tune. Singers I understand. I would have had to contribute as ”trend monger” in Zappa terminology.

In the 70's sometime, in a rock venue called Festival Hall, and I was stoned out of my tiny mind...
