Anyone use Spotify?

Post by Rum » Mon Sep 17, 2018 7:44 pm

I listen to music a lot and I've invested in a DAB radio that also plays internet radio and Spotify. I'm thinking of getting a so called 'premium' Spotify account (a tenner a month seems worth it if it is worth getting).

Anyone use it? What are your thoughts?

(P.S. I don't torrent illegally any more - haven't done for five or six years)

I use it. It's great. It notes what I listen to and makes suggestions based on that. I'm always being introduced to new bands I would never of heard of. Certainly not on the radio these days.

Yeah I use it. It's a fantastic way to hear new music that you would never otherwise hear about.

Spotify can tell if you’re sad. Here’s why that should scare you!
...

Now, to be clear, there’s nothing particularly machiavellian about what Spotify is doing with your data. I certainly don’t think that they are working with shadowy consulting firms to serve you ads promoting a culture war while you’re listening to music that suggests you might be in a casually racist mood. Nevertheless, I find it depressing that our personal, private moments with music are increasingly being turned into data points and sold to advertisers. Or, in some cases, being mined for economic insights by central bankers. This year, the chief economist at the Bank of England said researchers were increasingly gauging the public mood by analysing Spotify streaming data.

The only annoying thing about Spotify is that it is a bit echo-chambery. If you really like a song and listen to it and similar ones, then it serves you up more similar ones, which you listen to and some of them you like, then you get served up even more of them. I wish it would be a bit more diverse on what it serves up.

I checked out a huge list of internet-only radio stations (the new radio can get those). From Kenya to California - so much out there. So I plan to trawl a bit.

Try WOYS Oyster Radio 100.5 on your FM dial from Apalachacola Florida. The accent is pure Floribama Gulf Coast. They have a particularly amusing "Beach Hour" starting at 5:00 local time (eastern standard/daylight) that spotlights local artists pretending to be Jimmy Buffett with varying degrees of success.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I heard Buffett's getting into the weed business.

How old is he these days anyway?

In his 70s. He's into everything, he's building these Latitude Maragaritaville developments for rich rednecks to retire in, they're building in Daytona, Hilton Head, and up on the Panhandle so far. He's also got a clothing line, beer and booze brand, medical weed, and of course music. I've no doubt he'll be selling to everyone when we eventually legalize it (a foregone conclusion, IMO). Parrotheads the world over are lining up to give him money. He's worth somewhere over 500 million now. Actually his beer, Landshark, is all right, it's basically a Mexican style lager like Corona or Modelo. Check it out, there are worse places to spend your Golden Years.

Not too shabby for an Alabama saltwater redneck boy, though Florida has officially adopted him and he's in the Pantheon along with Skynyrd and Tom Petty.

I use Apple Music but had Spotify for a while. It's quite good and worth it if you don't have Apple devices or dislike iTunes.
