Why has it waited so long I wonder?

I have all of his releases up until the time of his death. Was sorting them out yesterday as it happens and listening to a few tracks I haven't heard in a while so as to put some on my phone. He remains no less brilliant as time goes on..

Not sure how new this is, given the concert in question was in 1973 but there is a Roxy film around at the moment. Somewhat limited release by the looks too..

Here's a trailer.

Gail Zappa, Frank Zappa’s widow and head of the Zappa Family Trust, died at home on Wednesday, 7 October, according to a statement released by her family. She was 70 years old.

“Gail will forever be identified as a key figure in the creative renaissance that is Laurel Canyon,” read the family’s statement, posted on Facebook. “The memories she leaves behind are indeed her own art form. Her searing intelligence, unforgettable smile, wild thicket of hair and trailing black velvets leave a blur in her wake.”

Gail was responsible for releasing more than 30 of her prolific husband’s albums after his death in 1993. As head of the Zappa Family Trust, Gail protected her husband’s musical legacy and sought to ensure none of his material was used or released without her prior authorisation.

“I’m just defending the audience’s right to hear Frank’s music the way he intended it,” she has said, in a 2010 Guardian interview. “It’s not just for Frank that I do this, it’s also for the potential audience out there.”

Gail and Frank’s son Ahmet is due to take over the family trust, according to an announcement made in July.

Gail was born Adelaide Gail Sloatman in January 1945, and lived in London and New York before hitchhiking to Los Angeles, according to a Rolling Stones report. She met Frank when she was working as a secretary at LA nightclub Whisky A Go Go. The pair married when she was 22 years old, and pregnant with son Dweezil.

She is survived by Dweezil, Ahmet and her two daughters Moon Unit and Diva. At the time of writing, the cause of her death has not been confirmed

The Roxy DVD comes with a CD that is 69 minutes, not the full set. The track listing has some overlap with the old Roxy and Elsewhere but these are all from the film, the other one had several gigs condensed to two LPS originally.

I've got a bootleg of the original Roxy film. Will be nice to see that footage at a higher dpi.

Love this man. striking memories for me are City of tiny lights (animation), Valley girls (where Moon Unit did the vocals) and Zappa's collab Bongo Fury with Beefheart. Everything he did was brilliant but these stick with me for different reasons!

I think I have everything he did prior to his death - I'm a huge fan. I know Gale released piles of recordings over the years since but I haven't heard any of it. I am assuming like so much of his later stuff, it is the same music remixed or performed in a different venue.

Or am I wrong?

Funny band leader the Captain. He led his band by gestures and some sort of horn or trumpet. He did not read music.

Very wrong. His posthumous releases are as wide-ranging and varied as his earlier work. Much of it is completely new material that he never got around to releasing. Some is live recordings of familiar tunes with completely different musicians from totally different eras. Some is pure experimentation. Pretty much all of it is interesting.

I love Wazoo. A live album featuring the short-lived big-band that he put together. Imaginary Diseases, featuring the "little wazoo" band - a smaller ensemble that continued the tour - is also good. And then there's Feeding the Monkies at Ma Maison - Synclavier experimentation, similar to Civilization Phaze III.

I edited some good bits out of CP III for a sampler, but rarely play the whole thing anymore.
