No. It was pretty much English bands. We bought the Beatles 45s, then thevStones for those that had more cash. We played all of them, I did not speak a word of English at the time. Satisfaction? No idea, cool riff, though. My friend's brother still had Elvis records. He had a Beach Boys LP too, he would not let us touch it.

The concerts were for the teen girls, there you are right. Having orgasms in their seats.

The closest we got to seeing a band playing any of these songs was Jussi and the Boys. They played Obladi at my school in 1969. He actually got a start playing Ventures and Shadows covers, so he had skills by the time the Beatles arrived. His biggest selling hit was Pretty Woman in Finnish.

Jussi is a sort of father of rock bands (touring) in Finkand, playing some 50 years of dances. He played covers in Finland. Big proponent of American country all thru the 70s.

He wrote a dozen songs that he recorded, but covers has been his income 50 years. The drummer in the Beatles cover is his brother Eero.

It's hard to disentangle their cultural and social impact from an appraisal of their musical worth or skills. They were more than their music, and yet it's the songs that are the historical documents which we now try and judge their impact by.

Ani's spot on though when he says that much of their output is a twig on the Black branch of the Musical Tree of Life, but they also produced folksy story songs, singer-songwriter type songs, syrupy croon-tunes that Pat Boone or Doris Day could've sung, tidy character songs that drew on musicals and the American Standard repertoire, proto-European-pych, of course, along with the R&B, Doo-wop, the gospel epics, and that rowdy rock stuff. And then there's George Martin's conservatoire influence to take into account, and the work of engineers like Geoff Emerick who were inventing new technologies and coming up with novel ways to use the studio as another kind of musical instrument. They were more than a single twig - something like a small bush perhaps.

They started as a covers band after all, playing five sets a night for party people in Hamburg. They brought all that learned entertainment value with them when they sat down to write and record, and it all got churned up and spewed out in material people really responded to. It was like what people already knew, but also brand new at the same time.

Their proficiency, productivity, and diversity when it came to making music marks them out musically speaking even if you don't like the sound of it. But as I said, it's hard to assess all that independently of them being, you know, 'The Beatles'. Every recording represents its time to some extent, but even so, I can't think of another pop band in the history of recorded music who managed to integrate and re-synthesise, and represent in a single historical moment all that was going on in popular musical culture at the time.

Can't stand Ob-la-di, Yellow Submarine, or Maxwell's Silver Hammer though.

I guess Ani is confusing us saying that they somehow inspired it all. No, they were a mechanism, a catalyst. They led me to Chuck Berry and Dylan.

They were also a model of how to sell and market a band just to teens. So we got the Byrds et al. They were a brand so you had to copy and slightly alter it.

Even if we can credit The Beatles somewhat of mainstreaming rock and roll to a wider audience to some extend I think writing them as a start point in the history of rock is like using Eminem as a starting catalyst in the history of hip hop and downplaying or writing out the black acts that preceded him.
Agreed. Their first album came out in '63. By that time, rock had already been around for over a decade, and was already mainstream, in the US at least. I love the Beatles, but they were not progenitors or trailblazers in any way. They were just good at what they did.

They were not trailblazers as a guitar band but they certainly pushed the envelope of what you could do in the studio. This was mainly because they had no limit on studio time. Also, the layers of tracks got more sophisticated.

It was high quality pop. It led to things like Genesis.

In the 50's what did you have? Bloody American crap. It was terrible. Jerry Lee Lewis was the wildest thing. As for Presley pathetic. The Everly Brothers with "Cathy's Clown" was top of Radio Luxembourg's top twenty for three months. My sister and I listened to RL on a Pye radio at midnight Saturday on Long Wave! It was a desert. The only pop music was Saturday morning on "Children's Favourites". A request programme. The sixties was when the bomb dropped. Harold Wilson got into power and things looked great. The pill came on the market and everybody went wild. The Beatles and many other bands changed our lives. No more crew cuts. Shoulder length hair was the norm.
It was a great time. I dont think any generation since has experience such a dramatic change in society.

It's true. Bloody American crap was all just cheap, Beatles rip-off! :lay:

I remember when Chuck Berry said "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'John Lennon'".

Yeah but Chuck Berry made the mistake of playing rock and roll to teenagers while black.

The Beatles were not fantastic? Perennoal topic.

What next? Vivaldi wrote the same concerto 600 times?

...lecturer at the RAM quoted Stravinsky’s remark: “Vivaldi didn’t compose 600 concertos but one concerto 600 times.”

Lecturer was wrong. Nobody really knows who came up with that quip. I put my money on Hildegard von Bingen. It also resembles the style of Oscar Wilde's oneliners. Donald Trump would be a rank outsider.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould
