Any particular genre, LW?
I tend to be pretty eclectic and it depends on my mood. Sometimes gentle Baroque, sometimes classic rock, occasionally extremely loud metal ...
For me it is typically symphonic rock and female fronted gothic metal (some types, it varies from band to band).
Although, when I am in a bad mood, nothing feels better than some Disturbed.
Symphonic rock? I love it - Rhapsody of Fire FTW.

It's the strings, isn't it? Depending on the piece being played, they really resonate with the mind/brain, vibrating through the nervous system ... just beautifully ...

I, on RD.net, wrote:Hmmm... Listening to the Mahler tune again in a more sober mood, I'm more apt to see the sort of "wandering" sad, slow melody. Yes, it deserves more credit than I gave it yesterday; but, it still doesn't push all my melodic buttons. In my head I have a very intuitive notion of which notes sound well together - which notes that played together can make the difference between a fair or a legendary composition - and Mahler isn't putting all of those notes together.
Of course, since my own music collection is quite ostinato-ridden and fairly up-tempo, I'd have to search quite hard to find a wandering melody that did push my buttons, to give you some idea.
To continue with the indecent metaphors: It's like a sexual act that you are wanting with every ounce of your being to be the most transcendental ever - but your partner just keeps making contact a hair's breadth away from where you really want it - and instead of finding yourself arching back and utterly losing yourself, you find yourself biting your lip half in pleasure and half in frustration, expecting it to finally hit a magic spot any minute now and hurl you into a dreamland of pure ecstasy. But it never quite does it, and just keeps you floating on the edge of this world all the way up to the finish line.
And then there are those compositions that just grab you by the waist the minute you press play, and push every single button that you never knew you had as the notes flow over you, and you're left lost in that dreamland until you slowly start to come around once it's done with you.
If this music does it for you, then I suppose it's all down to that old, "different strokes for different folks" line, eh?
Pachelbel's Canon just gets me everytime :
Then they for sudden joy did weep,
And I for sorrow sung,
That such a king should play bo-peep,
And go the fools among.
Prithee, nuncle, keep a schoolmaster that can teach
thy fool to lie: I would fain learn to lie.

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return. Salman Rushdie You talk to God, you're religious. God talks to you, you're psychotic.
