What should I be listening to?

Post by hadespussercats » Sat Mar 12, 2011 1:12 am

I'm getting increasingly out-of-touch with the music of the day.

What're the young-uns listening to these days? What's the hot new sound? Or even the hot not-quite-so-new-but-still-awesome sound?

Please advise. My tastes are eclectic, so don't shy away from any genre.

Thanks!

if you wana know what the youngins are listening to you could turn on the FM radio, but all that shit is garbage.

you say your taste is eclectic, but everyone says that. tell me your three favorite albums, that'll help me make more suitable recommendations.

Whiny emo shit or pop idol style bubblegum shit as far as I can make out. I'm getting old aren't I

I'd rather you just told me yours-- it'd save me from the headache of trying to choose just three. When I say eclectic, I'm talking about more than three categories.

All right. Off the top of my head, I'll say:

Post- Bjork
Friday Night in San Francisco- Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, and Paco deLucia
Bach: The two- and three-part inventions- Glen Gould

Ask me tomorrow and my answers will be different.

What, you guys got nothing?

It's a sad day when the mommybloggers I read have more to say about tunes than a bunch of rowdy atheists.

I'm disillusioned. Really.

You should listen to Turbonegro. "I've got erection" is a particularly nice song.

Or you should listen to Pearl Jam.

Or The Smiths.

Or Michael Jackson.

Or Placebo.

Do I count as as a young-un? :ask: I haven't a fucking clue what the young-uns of today listen to, most of my favourite musicians are long dead, several born pre-1900  Maybe try that Lady whatsherface.

There are three ways to answer your question:

Firstly - are there any genres that you have not availed yourself of ? There must be, so try checking them out - and while we at it let's push that envelope out as far as we can - and certainly beyond your comfort zone:

Jazz / Classical / Country / Stoner / Psychedelia / Glam / Punk / Rock / Acoustic / Death / Speed / Thrash / Blues

Secondly - if you have a desire to listen to new types, the question doesn't even need to be asked - you will do so anyway.

Thirdly - what on Earth makes you believe that the youger generation has more musical nous than the older ones - they are the last ones to look to - and why do you need others anyway - those two appendages on either side of your head that you mistakenly think are for hanging bits of metal off, will be far better judges of what you should listen to than the opinions of someone half your age.

I find a good way to discover new musicians/styles is to listen to something you like on Youtube and flick through the videos down the side.. whether it's a different artists version of the song, a related genre, a song by the same artist in a different style.. it can lead you to new music. A lot of the blues songs I enjoy have been done by many musicians over the years but have a different sound, I've been lead into bluegrass and skiffle this way.

There's an electric version of it as well but I can't find it on youtube. Best songwriter to come out of Northern Ireland since Tim Wheeler.

This is a good idea, MF.

I like bluegrass, too-- though I'm most familiar with the Dolly Parton version of it. But Bela Fleck is cool, too. Anyone else you like?

I couldn't get the third one to play, but the first two were right up my alley. Thanks!
