For purely 'beating off over how fucking amazing they are' I don't think you can top Dream Theater, but LaBrie isn't a patch on Bruce Dickinson when it comes to showmanship.

Musical masturbation, yes, there is plenty of that, but they are the nicest guys I ever met, with the possible exception of Kings X. Whenever anyone says that they choke/cram/shred the notes too much it usually means that person has only heard their high octane stuff. To contrast, take for example Sikth. Now THAT is wanking.

And yes, despite not looking very metal (I am growing my hair long again though) and being slightly too pretty to fit in at a metal gig I am a total metal head. When my hair gets long again I may well look a bit more typical. Not since I played guitar in a Van Halen tribute band over ten years ago have I had long hair. I am only doing it now because the first greys have turned up, so I want to have it long again while it still has colour, lest I look like an aging bluesman still dreaming of the big payday.

I am not exclusively metal though. My music collection is about as diverse as it gets. It's a standing joke amongst my friends that there is something to love and something for everyone to utterly loathe in my iTunes library. There is very little music that I do not see any value in, but that place does exist and the guardian of those gates is Craig David.

Yay, same here. In fact, just check out my current signature playlist. I'm no longer in my metal band, and am now putting together a pogue-esque folk group to keep myself entertained.
As for DT, there's a lot of good stuff, but seriously... It can get really fucking boring. Like, horrendously so. All you really need from them is Images & Words, and maybe Train of Thought if you want to gape in awe at extreme technical proficiency.

If you like folk-y stuff then check out Ayreon, Iona, Ambeon, Arjen Lucassen, Avantasia, Beardfish, Dave Bainbridge, Troy Donockley. Flower Kings, Pain of Salvation, Star One. Killer bands all. Also, I recommend Kings X to anyone, especially live. Never in my life have I heard just three men make such a soundscape. Purely for having such a brilliant name I would point you towards '...And You Will Know us by the Trail of Dead'.

Images and Words has aged immensely well. An incredible album. ToT was pretty goddamn dark and incredible.
