Good Choir Songs?
Good Choir Songs?
Hey folks.
I run a small and amateurish singing club at my work. The participants are all non-native-speaker English students, and we do a concert every now and then.
I'm looking for more good song ideas, because our repertoire is rather scant. To give you an idea of the kind of thing we've done before: Stand by Me, Let it Be, Happy Ending (Mika), Lean on Me, The Rose, Still Call Australia Home, Somewhere over the Rainbow, Halleluiah (Leonard Cohen)....so yeah, a bit of a mix of kitschy and classic songs.
Open to any and all suggestions....

I have absolutely no experience in the area, but I hear Anthems can work. My brother's in a choir at his school, I can ask him if you'd like.

Anthems, eh? Sure, if your bro's willing and able to give some good ideas.

Sorry, by anthems I meant Rock Anthems.
He's in a third party choir group that operates through the school, I'll see if I can get some names off him.

I guess you want something that can utilise harmonies. Something that choirs can do. There are many fine works in the classical field but also some great stuff from Broadway. Harold Arlen's song "My Shining Hour" is almost hymn like and about 3 mins long. Also the well known, and again hymn like "You'll Never Walk Alone" from Carousel.
I should add that many versions of My Shining Hour are jazzy and upbeat, about as far away from the composers actual requirements.

1940s version with choir accompany. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40g-1qdv ... re=related
And Liza Minelli with intro verse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqk3r_Cm ... re=related

Vocal groups like The King's Singers and the German group Wise Guys have beautiful arrangements on a lot of songs. I know you can buy arrangements from both. The groups are all male, but I think you can get arrangements for mixed choirs as well. Both fun to sing and fun to listen to
