The Smiths

Greatest band evar, or greatest band evar? I tried to get into Morrissey solo, but it just wasn't the same. Morrissey and Marr were an unbeatable combination.

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Here is my Ode to the Admin at AFA who have locked me in a petting zoo muted for 24 hours while they win their one-sided argument.

Frankly Mr Shankly,
Nothing you can do corrodes my soul. Heaven knows I'm not miserable now. To me every day is like Sunday.
I am human and I need to be loved but everybody's got to live their lives; and God knows, I've got to live mine.
And now I know how Joan of Arc felt as the flames rose to her roman nose
And her Walkman started to melt . A ventrilloquist filling in the blanks while I suffocate.
You taunt someone gagged and call him insane - bigmouth strikes again
Closer comes the screaming knife, "this beautiful creature must die" you say.
Like the belligerent ghouls that run Manchester schools...

Lion (IRC)

Oh yeah...PS...Not the greatest band but certainly on my top 100.

After that concert my friend and I hung out and waited for the crowds to leave and then snuck in backstage. Unfortunately the band was gone too, but we did abscond with one of their towels that smelt like a sweaty male band person :hehe: and the roadies tried to get us to stick around awhile. :ddpan:

(For the record, we left.)

Never really bought into the hype surrounding The Smiths. Johnny Marr is a great guitarist but Morrissey is an egotistical prick and not really much of a singer - he has three voices - the deep one, the warbly one and the high, squeaky one. The best of what they did together is pretty decent but not exceptional.

Hi Xamonas Chegwé,
Thanks for killing a good topic.
Morrissey was emo before anyone knew what emo even was.
I think you overlook the lyrics just a bit.
Come on...Joan of Arc's Walkman melting. (Ipod for those who wonder what's a Walkman)
You had to know that Joan of Arc was claireaudiant to appreciate those lyrics and "in the day" there were people with and without IQ's buying "records and tapes"
Lion (IRC)
I still have the tape of their self titled album in the garage - along with Echo and the Bunnymen etc, etc.

Holy shit, Xammy. If you don't think The Smiths are exceptional, what do you consider exceptional?

Morrissey may very well be a prick. I don't know. I really don't know much about this band. In fact I was completely unaware of them when they were together, and only discovered them fairly recently. One of my old roommates introduced me to them. He was playing one of their records and my reaction was, "Oh my god. Oh my fucking god, who is this?!" If there is or was any hype surrounding this band, I don't have a clue about that. All I know is that this music speaks to me.

There are few bands whom I would pay to see live, The Smiths is definitely one of them.

Clearly the greatest band ever was Queen. The Pub Landlord says so, and he's right about everything.

I mean, could The Smiths do this? -

[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Frank Zappa. Miles Davis. Joni Mitchell. Igor Stravinsky. Richard Thompson. Björk. Nick Drake. Black Sabbath. Todd Rundgren. The Bonzo Dog Band. All exceptional - I could go on and list dozens more.

The Smiths never grabbed my soul like any of the bands in the list above did. Morrissey's voice does not move me (although I will conceded his lyrics are very good at times - but not up to the standard of Joni Mitchell) and all of the gladioli waving, like a third-rate Dame Edna, left me cold.

I suppose you gotta be at least part gay to really feel The Smiths like I do.
Me likey Joni Mitchell. Any album as good as Turbulent Indigo, though? Cannot find.
