Ennio Morricone

Post by Deep Sea Isopod » Sat Apr 17, 2010 10:04 pm

My fave piece of music evar is Chi Mai.

This is music beyond compare.
When we went on holiday to Rhodes, there was a glass bottom boat trip from Lindos around the bay. The boat sailed between some high cliffs. I was looking through the glass bottom at the awesomeness below...Suddenly the boats pilot played Chi Mai through the speakers. Those cliffs done something to the accoustics that no cathederal ever could.
If heaven existed, it existed right there , right then.

Anyone else have something to say about Morricone! :FIO:

When Chi Mai came out (back in the early 80s), I couldn't listen to it without tears starting. Fuck knows what that was all about, although I do get pretty emotional about music. I listened to it so often though, that I'm immune now. I regret doing that. Occasionally I try to rekindle it, but it always fails. I'll try again...

[But you're right, though, DSI  , whatever happens when I try here ...]

Nah. Gone.

Methinks you need to watch a "live" performance.

Can you just imagine sitting in the audience...........

I had the record from all the spaghetti westerns and played it endlessly when I was a kid. It was years before I realised it was the same guy. Yes, I'd get a full :shiver: there.

His story with Sergio Leone is amazing, too! They were class mates in school.

His score for John Carpenter's "The Thing" is wonderful. Very effective. Truly scary movie, and the music has a lot to do with that.
I think that language has a lot to do with interfering in our relationship to direct experience. A simple thing like metaphor will allows you to go to a place and say 'this is like that'. Well, this isn't like that. This is like this.

The Ecstasy of Gold is awesome. TGTBATU theme is my ringtone (Ecstasy of Gold starts too slowly unfortunately.) EM has such a great knack for matching music and image - if you have seen the film, you cannot hear the music without immediately conjuring the scene.

 IIRC, Leone himself wasn't quite sure himself how that scene would go, so he asked Morricone to write something, and then he produced a scene to suit the music ...

To think that the only Oscar he ever won was that honorary one a couple of years ago. Hollywood's way of saying "Sorry old boy ... we fucked up big-time. We should have given you at least half a dozen over the years."
