It sounds like a mandolin to me as well, but there's no-one listed on wiki as playing mandolin on the album, so it's probably a banjo (EDIT or a steel guitar?):

Definitely banjo - but beautifully played, it can be such a coarse instrument. Natalie sounds very different on this track than on the few that I have - reminds me of Beth Orton, in a very good way (if, indeed, there is a bad way!)
