Re: Bruce Springsteen - SHIT!
If you grew up in NJ in the 70s and 80s - you like Springsteen.
New Jersey produces a lot of stars. In addition to Springsteen (Asbury Park), we have the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra, as well as Frankie Valli, Connie Francis, Whitney Houston, The Fugees, Bon Jovi, the Smithereens, Kool and the Gang, George Clinton, Ricky Nelson, Dionne Warwick, Skid Row, the Misfits, Glenn Danzig, My Chemical Romance....

Heck, even the infrastructure for music distribution was invented in New Jersey. The phonograph was invented in Menlo Park, by Thomas Edison. And most of Marconi's work on radio was done and early radio transmission stations were built in New Jersey.devogue wrote:That's a fuck load of shit out of one state!Coito ergo sum wrote:If you grew up in NJ in the 70s and 80s - you like Springsteen.

My dad used to like her. That was a long time ago.

Now, The Smithereens ... there's a band I could dig.

I really like it, and I like the way he sings here. It's completely different than anything else I've ever heard him do.devogue wrote: I like the intro, then he starts singing and instantly ruins it. The melodies of the verse and chorus are entirely predictable, the harmony is predictable, the meter is predictable, the tempo is predictable.
It's just dull.
And he sounds like an old pervert.
And yeah, I know, that's why I like it

I'm with the OP. BS is bs. Can't think of a single song of his that I could stomach to listen all the way through. "Born in the USA" makes me want to defect to North Korea.

No. I'm stubborn on this one. "Born in the USA" sealed that coffin.Coito ergo sum wrote:Try something from one of the following albums:FBM wrote:I'm with the OP. BS is bs. Well, are you one of the "America sucks" crowd? If you are, then I'd think you'd like that song....FBM wrote:No. I'm stubborn on this one. Born to Run
Darkness on the Edge of Town

Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
'Til you spend half your life just covering up
[chorus:]
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I got in a little hometown jam
And so they put a rifle in my hands
Sent me off to Vietnam
To go and kill the yellow man
[chorus]
Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says "Son if it was up to me"
I go down to see the V.A. man
He said "Son don't you understand"
[chorus]
I had a buddy at Khe Sahn
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone
He had a little girl in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms
Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years down the road
Nowhere to run, ain't got nowhere to go
I'm a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

I hate that song, too. But if you listen to the lyrics it seems to be an anti-war song. It's not really the flag-waving song it first appears to be. Kinda like people think "The One I Love" by R.E.M. is a pretty love song, when in fact it's just the opposite.FBM wrote:No. I'm stubborn on this one. Coito, you seem to be familiar with Springsteen. Have you listened to Nebraska? It seems to be critically well regarded. Always been meaning to check it out.

Radio Nowhere almost made me want to make a Radio Normal or Radio Norway parody. But only almost

Yes. It's an acoustic album. His first effort after dumping the E Street Band after Born in the USA tour.tattuchu wrote:I hate that song, too. It's very raw, and it was recorded solo - by himself with no assistance - in a room in his old house in Asbury Park. He recorded them as demos, and then just released the demos.
