Carlo Gesualdo is known for two things. One of them is that he was the murderer of his first wife and her lover. As an aristocrat in late 16th century Italy he was immune from prosecution, but he did not get away scot-free. Even though he married again later, he became a recluse and his conscience drove him to self-punishment to the extent of eventually employing a servant whose principal task was to beat him.

The other thing he became famous for was the innovative style of his madrigals. Their discordance and the resolution of the tensions they created make them sound modern even 400 years later.
