Mass shootings are contagious

Post by Blind groper » Wed Oct 14, 2015 8:53 pm

Reference : New Scientist, 5 September 2015, page 10

Research published recently shows that the odds of another mass shooting go up substantially in the 13 days after a mass shooting. This is a function of publicity. The mass shootings that are most publicised are most likely to stimulate another case. Probably only 1 person in a million is subject to that kind of influence, but that is enough.

Interestingly, this research had to be done in the researcher's spare time, without funding. In 1996 the American congress passed a law making it illegal to use government resources to support better gun laws, and their law was worded so badly that it also means no government money can be used to research the social impact of guns. This is almost certainly the result of lobbying by the gun manufacturing industry, which has much to lose if the truth about the social impact of guns comes out. Gun control advocate organisations, on the other hand, WANT the truth, and work to raise money (pitiful amounts) to support such research.

You're not a patriotic Merican if you don't have a gun and you aren't planning to shoot loads of people with it.

I read the same article. Not surprising, the copy cat effect occurs in many contexts.

We know what Seth's answer will be - more "white hat" citizens wearing guns openly, ready to fill any miscreants with hot lead...

Preferably, mass miscreants. It's about time we had a white-hat mass-shooting. :tea:
