Bob was sitting on the plane, waiting to fly to Detroit, when a guy took the seat beside him. The guy was an emotional wreck, pale, hands shaking, obviously in fear.

"What's the matter," Bob asked, "flying bother you?"

"No, I've been transferred to Detroit.?? I've heard things are terrible there. They've got lots of shootings, gangs, race riots, drugs, poor public schools, and the highest crime rate in the nation.

Bob replied, "I've lived in Detroit all my life. It's not as bad as the media says. Find a nice home, go to work, mind your own business, and enroll your kids in a nice private school. It's as safe a place as you want to make it.

The guy relaxed and stopped shaking, and said, "Oh, thank you. I've been worried to death. But, if you live there and say it's OK, I'll take your word for it. What do you do for a living?

The mayor also blasted Ohio Rep. Candice Keller's Facebook comments blaming the shooting on "drag queen advocates," the Democratic Congress, former President Barack Obama, violent video games and the hatred of veterans.

"I think she just represents what is so disgusting about politics today," Whaley said. She said Keller should resign

The mayor did not have any updates on the status of the shooting investigation.

Police said Monday they were "not close enough at all" to determine a motive in Sunday's shooting that killed nine.

Connor Betts, 24, of Bellbrook, Ohio, was shot and killed by police shortly after the shooting began. He was armed with .223-caliber "assault-style" rifle and had body armor and extra magazines, according to Whaley.

The shooting in Dayton was the 251st mass shooting in the United States this year. It came shortly after a rampage Saturday at a Walmart jammed with back-to-school shoppers in El Paso, Texas, that left 22 dead and 24 injured.

But hey, the Republicans are helping bring two things upfront to 2020 election that they can't solve
1 gun violence
2 healthcare

Jim Jefferies plays it a bit loose with the facts, but he really is funny. I love the way he takes the Mickey out of society - and often enough himself.

John Oliver's take on gun control on Youtube is simultaneously funny and incisive as well, but it too is somewhat one-sided in relation to the Australian situation. You may need to log on to a US based proxy server to view it, or you could view it out on Vimeo.
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Here is a more balanced look at gun control in Australia, though I do not agree with the author's judgement that "the overregulation of firearms here in Australia is fucking stupid ... they haven't really done much more than just make things difficult for responsible gun owners".

It is worth keeping in mind that there is only limited scope for comparing the firearms situation in Australia with the USA. To start with, even before the new gun control laws came into effect, most murders in Australia were not committed with a firearm, unlike the US, where somewhere around 80% were perpetrated with one. I put that down to handguns having been outlawed in Oz since about the 1920s. Also, because we Australians are manifestly a better class of people. Apart from cheating in cricket we are civilised.

Responsible gun owners are responsible until they're not, making them indistinguishable from irresponsible gun owners.

Before you even get to that point there's not much background checking going on in most of the USA, so to begin with nobody can tell who is a responsible gun owner and who is not. I bet laklak is a self-declared responsible gun owner. Rhetorical question: Am I going to take his word for it? :P

I'll happily take lak's word for it, because the last thing I want to do is piss off a gun owner. :tea:

He's not always stoned, but he is too far away, and he doesn't have Brian Peacocks address, so he can't even mail him a bullet.
