An 11-year-old girl is responsible for successfully defending her mother and other siblings against their mother’s ex-boyfriend as he broke into their home and began stabbing her.

The young girl knew where her mother’s firearm was kept and apparently also knew how to use it. During the attack, she fired at him twice and struck him with both shots. While this was happening, another child in the home dialed 911 to alert police of the attack.

Bad idea. Trying to isolate children from firearms is highly counterproductive, as demonstrated by the fact that most of the extremely small number of accidental shootings by children occur in places and families where there are no guns and where there is no comprehensive firearms safety training.

Ignorance is never preferable, particularly when it comes to hazards that might take someone's life. We teach kids not to drink bleach or play with matches, but we don't ban either bleach or matches, both of which are responsible for more injuries and death to children than firearms are, do we?
