Said Peter...what you're requesting just isn't my bag
Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late
Turn stone to bread, said Daemon Duncetan
Turn stone to bread right away...

Dammit, I've seen similar stuff from the middle ages that was better designed.

Re: Only in America
It could have been, but it's just reprising a very old "solution" to it being forbidden to terminate unwanted pregnancies...

Re: Only in America
Abortion was not systematically or vigorously opposed by Christians until the 19th century. This might have something to do with Genesis 2:7, according to which the fetus is not considered to have a human soul until it is safely outside of the woman, is viable, and has taken its first breath.
Prominent theologians, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Alphonsus Liguori among them, did not regard termination of pregnancy before quickening or ensoulment as an abortion. Pope Sixtus V (r. 1585–90) was the only Pope before Pope Pius IX (in his 1869 bull, Apostolicae Sedis) to institute a Church policy labelling all abortion as homicide and condemning abortion regardless of the stage of pregnancy. (Wikipedia)
Under common law, including early English common law dating back to Edward Coke in 1648, abortion was generally permitted before quickening (14–26 weeks after conception, or betweeth the fourth and sixth month), and at women's discretion. (Ibid.)

Re: Only in America
That's what I was saying
Of course, Church care of abandoned children is kinda sketchy, if one judges by the informal burials found at various institutions, including ones dating from the 20th century...

Re: Only in America
What you were saying was that drop boxes for babies were "a very old "solution" to it being forbidden to terminate unwanted pregnancies." You are right insofar baby hatches have been around since the Middle Ages. You are wrong in claiming that they were meant to be a very old "solution" to it being forbidden to terminate unwanted pregnancies. Systematic and vigorous opposition to abortion by the Christian Churches did not materialise until the 19th century, at which time those drop boxes, then known as foundling wheels, were taken out of use and did not begin to make their comeback until 1952. So, contrarily to what you asserted, those drop boxes cannot be regarded as a very old "solution" to it being forbidden to terminate unwanted pregnancies.

Re: Only in America
Probably because, until fairly recently, actual abortive practices were likely quite desperate and rarer than one might think.
While it's a common conception that healers and herbwives were some of the main targets of the witch hunts that swept Europe (and even Merica) from the late 1400s to the mid 1700s, one thing I can't help but notice is that the punishment applied, death by fire, was not just the one traditonally reserved for heretics... on one hand, it was traditionally applied to all women, because it was deemed obscene to hang them, on the other, that pubishment was also traditional for another category of criminals : poisoners, and I guess that approximative use of the kind of plants serving in angel making would all too easily poison the mother.

Re: Only in America
Rarity plays no part. Abortion as such was not considered murder until the 19th century for theological and historical reasons I mentioned in this post.

Re: Only in America
They put about 1000 babies into a Ospedale della Pietà in Venice
https://www.exploreclassicalmusic.com/v ... della-piet
They were then able to raise a good number of musical girls out of the lot. If there had not been this "orphanage" we would have had a much smaller number of concertos from Vivaldi, only operas and sacred music.
Anna Maria was the multi-instrumentalist.
