Not true. Background checks are not the same thing as gun control because it's not the guns being controlled, it's the individuals seeking to purchase a gun. If they are not disqualified by law from owning firearms, they can buy ANY kind of gun they like, including machine guns.

What the statistoid you cite actually means is that some percentage of Americans want to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the insane, and that's all. It doesn't mean they want any more gun control.

No it's not because the only way to make background checks on private transactions work is to keep a database of firearms so the transfers can be tracked. That's what the Form 4473 does, albeit in a very cumbersome and slow process of tracking sales by FFL's, and the only reason the government can do this much is because commercial transactions are covered by the Commerce Clause. There is simply no lawful authority for the federal government to interfere with in-state personal transactions between individuals who are not federally licensed.

Even if such a system is created it will not track illegal transactions between criminals, which is the only reason to have such a system in the first place. Since it won't do the one thing it's intended to do, it shouldn't be done because it fails to accomplish its purpose.

Just because 90 percent want something doesn't mean they should get it.
