The main reason I have zero respect for big game hunters is that they usually just pay some skilled local guide about a buck and a half to spend 3 days tracking the game for them, then lead them by the hand to where the animal is so the "hunter" can fire his $5,000 rifle once at a stationary target, then have it mounted so he will have something to brag about when he gets back home.

I read all that, and use your last line as a reference point.Gallstones wrote:The hunter may take nothing but the head and shoulders for a wall mount, but the meat is made available to someone. How is that less ethical than killing, butchering and eating a young spike buck?
My take on trophy hunting is people just like killing things.

Not as much as they like bragging about it.

Reminds me of the Farside where the dogs are standing around looking at car mounted over the fireplace. One dog is glaring at his "wife" as she says, "Don't listen to him, the stupid thing hit a tree as it tried to avoid him in the middle of the road."FBM wrote:Not as much as they like bragging about it.

My sentiments exactly. It's wankery.FBM wrote:The main reason I have zero respect for big game hunters is that they usually just pay some skilled local guide about a buck and a half to spend 3 days tracking the game for them, then lead them by the hand to where the animal is so the "hunter" can fire his $5,000 rifle once at a stationary target, then have it mounted so he will have something to brag about when he gets back home.
I do have a lot of resect for someone who can shoot a squirrel out of a tree with a slingshot, though. That's skill.

The squirrel's dependents might disagree.
Actually, no .. they'll prolly just disagree.

Just stick to hunting them outside of the breeding season.
Besides, grey squirrels are considered vermin here and are therefore fair game all year round.

So?
Some things need to be killed.

Can you support this assertion that outfitters and guides get paid a dollar to do the prep work?FBM wrote:The main reason I have zero respect for big game hunters is that they usually just pay some skilled local guide about a buck and a half to spend 3 days tracking the game for them, then lead them by the hand to where the animal is so the "hunter" can fire his $5,000 rifle once at a stationary target, then have it mounted so he will have something to brag about when he gets back home.
A competent outfitter is ging to have to have done some scouting and studying to know the patters and habits of the animals and the makeup of the herds to be worth their fee.
Even if the rest of what you say is true, so what? An animal is culled, the meat is eaten by somebody, even the head isn't wasted--many sustanance hunters cut off the horns and toss the rest in the landfill.
How is any of what the trophy hunter does less ethical than what the sustenace hunter does?

So one should shoot it when it's not looking and/or in a spot that would not make for a clean kill?Clinton Huxley wrote:Anyone who wants to shoot an elephant in the face is a cunt.
What about those elephants that are destroying wells leaving the people without a clean water source, one that was very expensive to install?
What about elephants that are lame and suffering and will die slowly?
What if you are trying to shoot it in the chest but it turns and charges you?
