I think that language has a lot to do with interfering in our relationship to direct experience. A simple thing like metaphor will allows you to go to a place and say 'this is like that'. Well, this isn't like that. This is like this.

You make a considered decision based on your situation. If the guy with the gun just wants my wallet, I would hand it to him and do my best to memorise his face and everything else about him so the cops can catch him later. It wouldn't matter much, since my wallet never has much in it, and that little is not worth my life or even the assailant's life.Collector1337 wrote:Depends where you are.

If I thought my life was seriously threatened, I would probably run and dodge like crazy. If Seth was there, he would stop to pull out his gun, which would guarantee that Seth died with at least one bullet through him.

I've complied with the person's requests, I have to admit.
Would I have loved to have gotten the upper hand and been able to crack a skull? You bet! Not that I value the contents of my wallet over the well being of another, but I do value myself and everyone else to go about their business without fear more than some asshole who thinks making physical threats for selfish reasons are just fucking fine and dandy.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Why you approach them of course and start punching them, that way they then have a legal right to shoot youTero wrote:Scenarios

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

To be fair, nobody who has pointed a gun at me has demanded that level of ass kissing. Or any really. Hey, I LIKE Taylor Swift...I've been to TWO of her "Red" tour concerts in the last month or so...one in Columbus and one in Denver. I bought a ticket for the Columbus show because I was passing through at the right time and didn't have anything better to do, and I got two free tickets from her keyboardist, David Cook, for the Denver show. We met in a bar after the Columbus gig.Audley Strange wrote:Are they there, threatening you with the gun? I mean if it's some guy on the net who owns z gun, typing "I'm gonna call the police if you don't stop sending me links to Taylor Fucking Swift websites" I don't think there is much you can do.
She's a great performer and what a pair of gams!

Yup. Pointing, or even displaying a handgun to someone without lawful justification is a felony around here. That's why CCW owners are VERY careful not to "flash" the public inadvertently...the sheeple are easily frightened.Audley Strange wrote:So random nut with a gun threatens me? What would I legally be allowed to do? Even here I think I'd be allowed to kill the fucker. The law as far as I am aware considers anyone aiming a gun at another person in a threatening way as a criminal and as such I think it still would be considered an act of reasonable self defence.
Yup, the Monty Python rule applies: "Run Away!"If I had no fire-arm though? I guess I'd get the fuck out of there unless I has some way to destroy him.

That is an answer, and a very good one. Probably not because if I were there observing you being robbed, I'd be finding cover and shooting the bad guy in the back if I deemed it necessary to do so.Blind groper wrote:You make a considered decision based on your situation. You see, robbers are intent on robbing and getting the boodle and getting away. They use the gun as a THREAT to gain compliance, but they are not actually thinking about killing the victim, they just want the wallet. So, they are highly likely to hesitate to actually fire.
I, on the other hand, have trained for many years on exactly what to do when someone points a weapon at me and demands my wallet, and that is to draw and fire two to the chest and one to the head in 0.76 seconds, long before the crook can possibly perceive and react. I don't hesitate because I already know exactly what I'm going to do in that situation...I'm going to render the crook incapable of continuing the conduct that prompted me to shoot him in the first place. And I'm not going to dither for even a fraction of a second about whether or not he "deserves" to get shot dead, I'm just going to go right ahead and exercise my legal right of self defense. If he didn't want to get dead, he probably shouldn't have tried to rob me.

In my part of the world, (NZ and Australa) people who make claims like that are called wankers, and are subject to mockery. Certainly they are not taken seriously.Seth wrote:.

Bear in mind if someone put a gun to their own head ,demanded my wallet and said they would kill themselves if I didnt give them any money I almost certainly would give them my wallet. Better a lost wallet than having to watch brain splatter pie on the pavement.
I would hope most decent people would do the same (and call the police later of course)
