At least 18 citizen complaints have been filed against Van Dyke in his 14-year career, but he was never disciplined, according to a University of Chicago database. Eight complaints alleged excessive force, two involving the use of a firearm in addition to the McDonald shooting.

That would seem to be an indictment of the police department and its supervisory policies, not an argument for banning guns. After all, I don't think you really think police should be disarmed as well, do you?

...where they arrive shortly after everyone who was to be killed has already been killed...which is why the "special teams" are armed with brooms, mops and pails, because that's all they'll be good for.

Gee, just imagine if one or two or three or four staff members had been legally armed and able to pop up from behind a counter or around a corner and put a bunch of bullets in the shooter when he first showed up. Then the human toll would have been much smaller.

Er, it appears that this shooter used a rifle, not a handgun, which means that banning handguns would have left the police without any arms with which to respond.

On the other hand, if people inside the clinic had been armed, perhaps they could have stopped the killing right away. But they didn't, so they didn't, and you see the results.

If you're not legally eligible to own a firearm because you are a felon or have been adjudicated as a mental defective or involuntarily admitted to a mental health facility then I'm fine with the police confiscating your firearms. They have had this authority for a very long time now and this is absolutely nothing new at all, as judges routinely order disqualified persons to surrender or dispose of their weapons.

And if a felon is illegally in possession of a firearm do you really think he doesn't know it? Obviously if he's got an illegal gun then he doesn't care about the law that prohibits him from having it, so more gun control laws won't help.

Indeed. And therein lies the problem. Gun-banners would engage in universal prior restraint by assuming that no one is qualified to possess a firearm unless proven qualified. But that's not how we do things here. Here you get to exercise your rights until you prove that you cannot properly do so. We prefer that to the tyranny that results from using the other system.
