Well, it is unlikely to outtrick him in his own game anyway, considering how he rose from utter obscurity to where he is now, and the people is behind him.

He was a KGB guy - rather more than obscurity lifted his wings. Some faction, possibly military could oust him for the seat of power if he makes mistakes...hence the distraction of external wars in a time of sanctions. They wouldn't kill him, more useful as a political prisoner - given his fan base....and knowledge.

A more likely candidate is the Dalai Lama. He's a problem for the new UK relationship with China. Both sides would rather he fell under the wheels of a bus and being a religious man he's relying on the security of woo to keep him safe.
