Panem et circenses

Post by Tero » Mon Dec 26, 2011 1:03 pm

Where did we go wrong? I blame the puritans that landed here. Because Panem et circenses should include all the cheap thrills.

Said Peter...what you're requesting just isn't my bag
Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late

Turn stone to bread, said Daemon Duncetan
Turn stone to bread right away...

Bread and circuses. What the common folk need to be happy. Wine, women and song. All forbidden to the Puritans.

Excuse me, but I'm uneducated. Does this have something to do with Ringling Brothers and a slice of Pizza?

I disagree with including the internet. Social media and access to global news, not to mention Wikileaks, has encouraged people to become more politically aware, active and to organise dissent.

Wiki:
Juvenal here makes reference to the Roman practice of providing free wheat to Roman citizens as well as costly circus games and other forms of entertainment as a means of gaining political power. The Annona (grain dole) was begun under the instigation of the popularis politician Gaius Sempronius Gracchus in 123 BC; it remained an object of political contention until it was taken under the control of the autocratic Roman emperors.
