For Kev

Post by Pensioner » Sat Oct 22, 2011 4:22 pm

I took these photos on Thursday, these aircraft flew over my house and the Lanc was so low it rattled the chimney pots. Google York and Elvington and you will see why.

Wow, great shots, Pen! :td: I always find taking photos of moving things, be they aircraft or birds, to be most challenging!

I think it's all down to shutter speed - faster eliminates motion blur. Also I don't recognize those fighters in formation, which is odd because I know most every fightercraft from WWII, and a lot of the bombers too.

Was this the latest in B.N.P propaganda or has Cameron decided a good old British spirit of the Blitz type war will stop the oiks whining about the economy?

That reminds me of something my dad told me about when he was a young teenager. He was just old enough to end up in the army in 1945 and he never saw 'action'. He did later in Palestine - long story.

Anyway kids during the war here in Britain were taught to recognise planes from their silhouettes against the sky - and to tell enemy ones of course from British ones and if necessary to give the alarm. Where he lived in the Welsh valleys, German bombers used to stray from Cardiff docks either due to confusion, cowardice or damage and sometimes just dump their bombs randomly. One landed a mile away from where they lived. One of his mates spotted it too as it flew north and crashed somewhere in mid-Wales.

He could name any WW2 plane you asked him to - and I learnt a few too as a result.

Lancs, Spits, Hurricanes and Tempests are all easy to ID. They're practically iconic.

But what are those fighters in diamond formation? They're certainly not any Brit fighter I recognize. They look a tad like modified p-51s, maybe b or c - Brits took those on lend-lease from 'Merkins.

They are the Tucano T1 that the R.A.F uses as a trainer.
