A warship once had a gun fight with armored vehicles.

1 pt for where.
1 pt for when.
1 pt if you name the warship.

Is it this?
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia - A Canadian warship surged out of heavy fog in the North Atlantic yesterday in an attempt to force into port a rogue US-owned freighter that for two weeks has refused to relinquish a cargo of battle tanks and other combat gear representing 10 percent of Canada's armored might.

I kinda figured that wasn't it. Google isn't being much help.

Okay, here you go.

The cruiser USS Savannah got into a gunfight with tanks of the Herman Goring Panzer Division during the invasion of Sicily. 70 panzers attacked the beachhead before the artillery train was unloaded and ready for action. The Savannah destroyed 16 of the tanks and damaged many more. Interestingly, the tank commander didn't get down on the beach to mix in with the landings, but stayed on a ridge and acted like artilery. Perfect target for the cruiser's 8" guns.

New question.

What forum member shares a name with a very important part of the invasion of France? (If you get this one in a single day I'll be very impressed.)

My turn!

Which European head of state allegedly lit a cigar in Hitler's face, knowing full well the Führer's dislike of smoke?

Mussolini.

Mussolini actually considered siding with what would become the Allies after WWII started.. I forget all the reasons why he went with Hitler who he couldn't stand. As I recall mussolini also told others Hitler was nuts - or something to that effect.

Neither was it Mussolini. This guy was actually liked by his country.

I suppose Churchill would have done it if given the chance. he loved cigars. Did they meet before the war to enable such a smoky exchange?

No, it was during the war. This kinda makes it a lot more daring. And it wasn't Churchill, although the person in question was of equal if not greater badassness.

Hmmm,

The only one I can think of now is Stalin. I assume it would have been while the Von Ribentrop (sp?) pact was still in effect - before the USSR joined the Allies.

So the only European countries that come to mind are Italy, England and Russia? There's to more to Europe than that :P
