Okay, I'll have mercy on you.

The USS Baltimore was the oldest warship at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th, 1941. You can just see her in the foot of Arizona blowing up.

What was the long retreat ever conducted by a military force?

Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery's British Eighth Army chasing German General Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps westward across North Africa?

No. Wrong continent. Wrong war.

Wow, that's old:

I must see if she's listed in my Cruisers of WW II book. :read:

The Long March? Maybe not, given that it was not one march, and ... oh, well, you know.

Are we talking time, distance, or some combination? And we talking land-based? :levi:

Didn't think so either ... :lay:

You mean it's not WWII? Another answer is Britain retreating from the Japanese through Burma.

Not the Long March. I'm calling straight line distance as I don't know the exact path.

Right continent, however.

Good old Uncle Bill Slim again. Longest British retreat I think, but I'm guessing we're still well short of the mark.

Being the biggest, that's no surprise. We're not talking the Mongols by any chance?

Not the Brits in Burma. And the Mongols returned for the funeral, they didn't retreat.

Yes, that's the one I was thinking of. I was just wondering if someone was being a little bit creative. :D

... Xenophon and the Ten Thousand? Don't know why I forgot to mention this before. Too obvious maybe? :hum:

It must involve the gun dropping cheese eating surrender monkeys somehow.
It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.

Thought so, but I had to check: At c. 1,500 miles, it would likely be a mere bagatelle compared to the longest retreat. Whatever that is. :lay:

This isn't something to do with the Russian Revolution or Civil War is it? I seem to remember a group of Czechs who had to go most of the way around the world (or so it seemed) to get home. I don't know if they were retreating all the time though. Although as someone once remarked about the US Marines in Korea in the winter of 1950/1951: retreating is simply advancing in another direction.
