The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

 Yes, I forgot to mention the original, which is how I prefer to quote it.

Anyway, we await your question, Mon Vieux :coffee:

Since Marvin may not be around for a few hours, I propose to throw the question-setting opportunity out to the floor.

Which is another way of saying that I see both Gawdzilla and Geoff online. Either of them can set the next question, but it's first come, first serve. :tea:

Here's an easy one. Why was the best American fighter of WWII initially rejected by the English?

Because the US banned the export of turbochargers, thus rendering the Allison-engined Mustangs useless at high altitude.

... that's completely off the top of my head. Now I'll google it to see if I was right ...

Well, sort of. Funny how things are never quite as you remembered them - or does history just get rewritten?

No, and yes 'we' did. The Mustang was commissioned relatively early in the war, and by the British, not the US.

EDIT: Joe Baugher has more history on the P-51:

OK, give me a few minutes. I've just been informed of a bug in one of my search screens :comp:. Thankfully it's not serious, but I have to appear outwardly concerned. :tea:

What was the original reporting name for the Kawasaki Ki-61 fighter, and why?
