GW was not the first President of the United States.

Aha! I think I was a bit previous with Peyton Randolph. He was the first President of the Congressional Congress but at the time the USA was still subject to the British throne. The P of the CC when the USA declared independence in 1776 was John Hancock - so it must be him.

But at that time they were not the United "States", but the United "Colonies". So, no, not John Hancock.

(However, that is the answer to another trick question.)

Goddamnit. I just found this thread, have known the answers to all previous questions, but have no idea on this one.
I came here to sneer at the Cats and JimC. Stayed to see what was going on. Oh, yeah, blasphemy is a victimless crime.

Arthur St. Clair was president of the CC when the constitution was adopted in 1787, thus forming the USA, so it must be him in that case. :dono:

He wasn't the First president of the CC. And the USA was form after the Revolutionary War. The Constitution only affirmed that Union.

In that case - Elias Boudinot. He was P of the CC at the time of the Treaty of Paris.

And I already mentioned the first P of the CC - that was Peyton Randolph - September 5 - October 22 1774.

If nobody else posts one before I wake up I'll find something equally tortuous. Night all.

I would say that Randolph, Hancock and Boudinot have equal claims to being the 'first president'. The article that you link to even says that his status as first president is 'a myth'.

A dodgy question IMNSHO.
