I don't hold any responsibility for what the British Empire got up to, but at the same time I do have advantages, possibly, probably, because of it. Some of the stuff doesn't really seem to end either - go on a travel forum and you'll still find plenty of talk about handling the natives, I remember a thread of what to do with a tout in india, under the guise of jest it got SICK, really fucking sick. It's easy to see that sort of stuff in someone else but what scares me is the bits of it in me that I don't see at all - because they don't, they'd tell you how even minded they are and then say something repugnant in the next breath.

I guess in a way I am sorry, not blackmailed into it though - I just am.

(I agree on the government apologies though - fuck they are getting ridiculous, for fear of criticism of it being half hearted, but then that's just as much to do with mud sling politics I think)

though i agree that such tragic events had nothing to do with you or I, any more than the K/T catastrophe, it is good never to forget them; for as Santayana (or some such philosopher) reminds us, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it".
