Instead of getting sucked into Afghanistan, what if the British decided to go for China in 1839? Could they have done it with help from India?

Perhaps in stages? Yunnan, Guangxi, Gizhou and Sichuan first?

Laudanum was legal in the US long after the Opium Wars. Sherlock Holmes staked out an opium den once. I don't see what the big deal was.

There were not many problems with opium in the Uk until it was illegal ,cf prohibition ! seems stupid to have addictics stealing £200 a day to buy about £5 of opium :dono:

Giving the addicts their drugs instead of having them commit crimes has been tried, but the god-botherers always get into the act and screw things up.

The same policy has been used for 50 (ish do not get pedantic with me ) years and has FAILED But no one dares to say this. The Police could actually do a useful job if the the LAW actually made sense .

The Chinese eventually assimilate all invaders. Take Chinggis Khan, the archetypal barbarian from the north, laying waste to Chinese cities. Two generations later and his grandson Khubilai Khan was building "stately pleasure domes", although he was still a hard-nosed bastard like his grandfather.
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out brief candle
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing. [
Macbeth]

It am wicked to mock the afflicted. [

Dope will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no dope. [
