Tom Paine's chapel

Post by Lozzer » Mon Aug 24, 2009 9:48 pm

Went looking for Tom Paine's Chapel today. A quick chat with a museum receptionist got me directions to a very property down the road. It looks mid 18 centuryish, but I can't be certain. The stonework (if it has any) is painted black and white. The 'Chapel' is a private property. I would have taken photographs but that would have been a rather odd thing to ask permission for. It has a plaque bearing its name of 'Chapel Cottage'. Could it possibly be the Methodist Chapel established by John Wesley in the 1750s and visited by Tom Paine on a regular basis during his stay here? Perhaps.

Now this is probably something known only by local historians, but does anyone know where the main road was in Grantham during the 18th century? Paine may have been stationed near it during his position as a junior excise man here.

Text is too small, even when enlarged. I need to know the history of the A1 as well, I'm not sure if there has always been an exact equivalent or one which took a different root. There might be a possibility that the original went towards and past Barrowby, leading of eventually into Newark and Nottingham etc. If so, I'm living on that fucker ;)

That was the first I found that had a map - google: Old Grantham map - there are plenty others.
