Re: Human, All-Too-Human
I suppose this thread is partially about scepticism, but not to the extent we are talking about in reference to Popper or science. It takes a big sceptic to be sceptical of science. Yes, being sceptical of scientific facts isn't what this thread is about. I'm not sure why people are talking about s...

JimC;I suppose Popper is beyond the pale in this thread. 8-) I enjoyed "Conjectures and Refutations"... Do we conjecture and guess that water will come out of the facet when we turn on the tap? Or, do you expect and predict what will come out of the tap when you turn it on after having 10,000 exper...

Re: Human, All-Too-Human
I don't have the time to fully engage what I see to be some errors in approach in this thread, so I'll just have to drop the Feyerabend bomb and promise to come back later and see how much damage it did. Not sure how reliable Feyerabend's knowledge of science is? I'd be a bit careful of his work, '...

This is exactly why I've been over there, at least, a dozen times in the last few days alone.

Re: Announcement about RDF Part 3.
The real problem? Having established that religious denominations are used as mere labels, and having rather impatiently conceded that economic and political conflicts lie at the heart of the problems in Northern Ireland, Dawkins desperately tries to shoehorn his pet peeve into the equation. The ‘r...

RebeccaSmick"Is this skepticism something that people can actually live by and thus attain this state of ataraxia? I can only report that I feel a lot less perplexed after adopting it. Re: Metaphysics as an Error
Is this skepticism something that people can actually live by and thus attain this state of ataraxia? I can only report that I feel a lot less perplexed after adopting it. Sounds a lot like a Buddhist... Although while a Buddhist sets out to end suffering, a pyrrhoist seeks an end to perplexity whi...

Re: Metaphysics as an Error
Pyrrho's goal was to reach a state of ataraxia , in which there was no perplexity, stress, etc. So, if I were to follow this line of thinking... the suspension of judgments, then I too would be relieved of perplexity, stress, etc? When Jerome says he's here to fulfill a need for conflict and Luis s...

Re: Metaphysics as an Error
Pyrrho's goal was to reach a state of ataraxia , in which there was no perplexity, stress, etc. It's interesting that he went to India with Alexander the Great and only developed his school of philosophy after his return. :eddy: It would seem, from the accounts, that he achieved his goal. Why inter...

Re: Metaphysics as an Error
Jerome I'm not sure that you gave proper credit for this when you said it over at RDF in one of your postings.
I don't even know if it needs to be credited, but just in case.

Re: Metaphysics as an Error
RebeccaSmick"What would be the advantage of adopting a Pyrrhonian view? You'd deprive yourself of uttering things you cannot possibly know to be the case. That includes quite a bit of 'things' doesn't it? IOW, it's an exercise of parsimony, humility and reason. Reason is a poor tool according to Je...
