Re: "Climate Change - Doubts, Denials, Scepticism, and Polit

Unfortunately you'll need that tree in the coming years. There are probably some hosehold goods you could tie together though, recycling and all. Er, it's the remnants of a tree that died and we had to cut down. Right now it's a lawn ornament. I'm curious if the Amish life style is fully sustainble...

Re: "Climate Change - Doubts, Denials, Scepticism, and Polit

Sustainability can be approached from making use of the ideas we have already to do the same things using less energy. Passivhaus design standards are a good example. Using less energy, getting more of it from renewable sources and conserving oil resources for things like plastics and pharmaceutica...

Re: "Climate Change - Doubts, Denials, Scepticism, and Polit

This isn't directed at anyone, but I never cease to be amazed by all the bickering. I ceased to be amazed a long time ago, now I'm just entertained. I think it helps if you drink. I see no issue with having the same level of convenience we enjy now but in a sustainable manner. What is the the susta...

Re: Gaia hypothesis (split from other Lovelock thread)

As an allegory It works very well .. it got people to understand the earth as a highly complex system of Linked cycles and smaller systems ... It falls apart only when taken too far because the planet is Not one organism but a highly complex system of linked cycles and smaller systems . Consider yo...

Re: "Climate Change - Doubts, Denials, Scepticism, and Polit

Hence there is literally no excuse for anyone not being well informed on the issue. Intuition is no substitute for good science, nor is politically or economically motivated rhetoric. I think the public understanding of these issues is inseparable from politics and economics. Of course, a reason is...

Re: Photography - Technique and Equipment considerations

Yeah, monopods are great. I have a rather ancient Manfrotto with a pretty basic head, and I use it a lot, often in combination with the OIS feature. Since I'm often shooting in construction sites, etc, a tripod is too cumbersome, and there's no room for off-camera lighting. There's also little or no...

Re: Photography - Technique and Equipment considerations

Thanks for the info. I know hardly anything about using flash. It's just like other light, really...move it around and vary the intensity until it does what you want. The important thing is that you get it off the camera so that you can change the lighting without changing the camera angle. Now tha...

Re: If your deceased grandparents are watching you....

Look at the stupid paranormal shows that are all the rage these days. They go into houses and measure the effects, supposedly, of the ghosts on the environment. Ghosts can make noises, bang things, slam doors, and even set fires and otherwise interact with the physical environment. I keep wondering...

They try to make the case that Reagan was actually a green president. That's just because he was rotting from the neck up. I'm from Thunder Bay area, a mere 600 km away by crow. I'll come to Winnipeg eventually, you have a good stamp show there. Excellent. I don't know about the stamp show, but we'...

Re: Do I go to the christening?

Go to the christening. Go to the party afterwards. Be polite. Be a little subversive, nothing too blatant. Then you get a chance to influence the kid as it grows up. When the kid is six or eight and tells you that "Jesus Saves," say, "Excellent, because the son of a bitch owes me money. Now he can p...

Re: The UK election thread

You guys are gonna love minority governments. It can work well (look at Canada's Pearson government in the 1960's) or it can be a clown act (look at Canada right now), but it's never boring. The really important thing is to learn how roll cigarettes while balancing a beer on your belly.

Re: Favorite "non-English" phrases?

"Awiss Awass." In Cree it translates more or less as "come here, go away," but it gets used like "fuck off," usually in a non-serious way.

Re: Resurrection Real, According to Some Scientists

I like the "The vinegar they gave Jesus was laced with pot, or maybe mescaline or something, so he only looked dead" theory better. I saw it on the History channel a couple of years ago and, while I doubt the theory, I find I can now claim that Jesus was dope fiend and I know it's rue because I saw ...

Good post, Woodbutcher. I'm not sure what this "style" thing you refer to in clothing is, but it sounds like a bad idea. ;) I'm not sure what part of the Northern Muskeg you live in, but if you're ever in Winnipeg let me know and we'll have a beer. Something about the vehicle downsizing. I'm finding...

Do you really think so nah, I post by using automatic typing so as to avoid thinking. Also. the pyramids were built by time-travelers. Then you're more easily fooled than I thought. Yup, I'm just a poor country rube from Saskatchewan. Never seen the big city before. Never went to skool. I put the s...
