Re: Are People Who Believe in God Stupid?

All good points - but, like I said, I was addressing your point about the theist who "chooses to learn science from the Bible." Naturally, music is not science, etc., and there may be plenty to be gained from the Bible. I've read it, and there are some very interesting stories, some very poetic por...

Re: Are People Who Believe in God Stupid?

(shit, I always hit the quote button in stead of the edit button - and apparently you can't delete a post here, so this is a 'placeholder' now).

Re: Are People Who Believe in God Stupid?

I've read a few different versions of the Bible, and I can tell you one thing for sure: there is no science to be learned there. None. Calm down Johnny Boy. Who was talking about science? Music isn't science either. Making love isn't science. Underneath all things there's the (natural/physical) 'wi...

Re: Are People Who Believe in God Stupid?

I think they are. They are obviously gullible, they aren't rational, they lie to themselves to intensify their God delusion and they don't have that feeling of "groundedness" and intellectual calm which I think is inherent in atheists. I agree, I definitely must be stupid. Sniff. To prefer the mind...

Re: A secular debate about abortion

Looking larger though, considering the explosion of the human population in the last 300 years. We are already on a path of using up limited resources, do you really think that if we outlawed abortion it would help our civilization at all? Yeah - limited resources as an argument. Adam Smith didn't ...

Re: A secular debate about abortion

Jcmmanuel - briefly, if this is possible - please outline your reason for holding the premise of the imperative to sanctify "human life" by simple virtue of it possessing a human genome, and even before it is qualitatively different from other living organisms broadly, and other animals… But how me...

Re: A secular debate about abortion

...since we all know perfectly well that given the opportunity, that embryo will develop, not into a guppy, but a sentient human being. The words "given the opportunity" are, I think, quite important in this context. There is a decision to be taken. The point of decision needs to be established (th...

Re: A secular debate about abortion

Oh, I stand corrected, radio and TV, huh? No correction, just some education about the many channels available to reach people. Scholarly journals or popular-scientific magazines for a smaller part of the population, TV for consumer-mentality people (although highly educational programs are availab...

Re: A secular debate about abortion

You can also read another atheist on this issue if you want: Jurgen Habermas - Europe's most famous atheist. Habermas has never been Europe's most famous atheist. Then you're not living on my tectonic plate; or maybe you're from Great Britain- oh the competition with Europe, especially Germany, eh?...

Re: A secular debate about abortion

It is worthy and noble to insist on regard, respect and dignity of human life, individually and collectively, but what does it mean in practical terms? This is supposed to be a secular debate about abortion, but I find it difficult to keep within that framework because most of the opposition comes ...

Re: A secular debate about abortion

In English, please? For the record, the Violinist Thought Experiment was raised to concede to the notion that the foetus is a "person" - to make the point that, even if it WERE a person, it has no particular right to live inside and live off another person, and that other person has the right to wi...
